30 Dec Keep Pets Warm This Winter
Winter is here! Colder temperatures mean bundling up for humans and pets. You know it’s important for puppy daycare and exercise during colder months; however, you may not think your dog needs extra protection from the elements. Depending on your dog’s breed, an extra layer or paw protection may be necessary. Read on to learn more.
Does My Dog Need a Coat?
Dogs with thick coats, such as Huskies and Malamutes, are well protected from the cold. Convincing them to come inside from the cold, however, can be an issue, since they love it. In contrast, miniature shorthair, toy, and small breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkies, and French Bulldogs can’t generate enough heat to stay warm in the cold. Short breeds, such as Dachshunds and Corgis (even though they can have thick coats) will brush their bellies against the ice and snow when they walk. Dogs that normally have long hair, but tend to be shorn, such as Poodles, also need to be protected from the cold. Basically, most breeds will benefit from an extra layer or less time outdoors when the weather turns colder.
Is My Dog Cold?
Here are signs to look for to tell if your pet is cold:
- They shake for no real reason (dogs shiver to keep warm).
- Your dog’s breathing gets shallow.
- Their gums look pale.
- Their heartbeat has slowed.
- Your pet tucks the tail and even rear end in.
Advice from a Puppy Day Care: Woofs & Wags
While it may be too cold out to play, it’s still important for your pet to receive regular exercise and puppy day care. This winter, remember to limit your time outside. Keep moving during your walks as motion generates heat. Dry your dog off when coming back inside. Finally, consider doggie daycare at a facility like Woofs & Wags. We offer doggie day camp supervised activities for all those active canines out there that need a social outlet during the day. We keep them entertained throughout the day with interaction and play in this dog day care program. Contact us to learn more.
